Forgot to add another possibility about the blindness. Was he so disgusted with himself that he could not look at anyone--face them in the eyes? We discussed in class that the only person he actually looked at was another beery face drunk with wee eyes. Was this the only person he felt superior to and therefor worthy of looking at/seeing?
